chase. good evening. i'm ken bastida. >> and i'm elizabeth cook. the question tonight, what was that mother thinking? cbs 5 reporter kiet do tracked her down. kiet? >> reporter: liz, it was a whopper of a story. she said a man came to her home, grabbed the daughter by the ankles, and they struggled over the toddler like she was some kind of rag doll. the police are calling it reprehensible. after plunging a neighborhood into fear, it was the burning question. >> can you explain what happened? everybody just wants to know why. >> reporter: san jose police did not mince their words. >> i mean, you just -- you can't say enough about somebody who presents information like this, especially when you're dealing with kids, and to think about, you know, the lies that she created. >> reporter: tuesday evening, san jose police said the mother called about a bold abduction.
11:01 pm
she even came in to help make a sketch. today, after just ten minutes of repeated questioning, she confessed. >> she finally admitted to it and stopped wasting everybody's time. >> reporter: police became suspicious when canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and surveillance video turned up nothing. they zeroed in on the mother after learning she had a criminal history. >> there's a lot of anger, with the amount of resources, not only for our detectives who are out there trying to solve legitimate crimes. >> reporter: yesterday, when we talked to nicole, she was emphatic about her story. >> i would be devastated if something were to happen to her. >> reporter: today she wasn't talking. >> any idea why your mom would do this? >> reporter: the whole thing was fake. >> are you serious? >> i kid you not. >> wow. wow. that's disturbing. >> reporter: melissa says she even got warning from her kid's

school and had to remind them about stranger danger. >> i was angry when i heard it was a lie. i thought, wow, she put us through a lot of anxiety. >> reporter: and the woman is here at home with her kids. if the d.a. decides to press charges, they'll arrest her. if convicted, she could face up to six months in jail and $1,000 fine. well, tonight was the big lance armstrong interview on oprah. yes, he admitted what pretty much everyone already knew. he's a liar. cbs 5 reporter juliette goodrich watched the whole thing. you think one point really stands out over another? >> reporter: there are a couple of moments. it was a 90-minute interview and you got this sense that he was able to internally justify why he was using performance- enhancing drugs. and wait until you hear what word he looked up in the dictionary to help him justify. >> yes or no. did you ever take banned
11:03 pm
substances to enhance your cycling performance? >> yes. >> yes or no. was one of those banned substances epo? >> yes. >> did you ever blood dope or use blood transfusions to enhance your cycling performance? >> yes. >> the seven-time tour de france winner, now stripped of his titles and banned for life telling a much different story. the truth. >> i view this situation as, um, one big lie. >> after years of denials under oath. >> how many times? were you a bully? >> yeah. yeah. i was a bully. >> reporter: armstrong said he didn't invent the doping culture, but he didn't stop it either. >> my cocktail, so to speak, was only epo but not a lot
11:04 pm
transfusions and testosterone, which in a weird way i almost justify because of my history with cancer. >> reporter: was he afraid of getting caught? armstrong said no. >> did you feel in any way that you were cheating? >> no. >> reporter: he said he even looked up the definition of cheating. i read "gaining an upper hand on a competitor." >> i didn't do it that way -- i didn't view it that way. i viewed it as a level playing field. >> reporter: armstrong says he will spend the rest of his life trying to earn back trust but knows some won't forgive. one of them, the wife of his former teammate. she testified she heard armstrong confess to doctors during his cancer treatment that he used performance- enhancing drugs. in return, she says armstrong questioned her sanity. >> he owed it to me. you owed it to me lance, and
11:05 pm
you dropped the ball, after what you've done to me and my family. and you couldn't own up to it. and now we're supposed to believe you? >> reporter: part two of the lance armstrong interview airs tomorrow. >> kind of creepy, because he kind of builds this sort of -- he's still kind of arrogant, even in the interview. >> tomorrow night shows more of an emotional side. he talks about his children, his mother. so he does break down in that regard. >> so he's human. >> i don't know. >> thank you, julia. you've probably heard about the whole manti te'o fake girlfriend hoax. there's still lots of questions. one big question involves stanford. the girlfriend was supposedly a stanford student. what's more, she was the victim of a car accident and cancer. certainly something people would talk about. so how did no one at stanford ever stop and wonder why they'd never even heard of this girl. linda yee went to the farm

11:07 pm
>> you see all this emotion. you see all of the talk of this, and in most of those pieces, 99% of them, there's no mention of stanford. >> so you would have caught it right then? >> we hope so. i hope so. if i hadn't caught it then, then i would really not be doing my job, and neither would my staff. >> reporter: he specifically remembers that grief-stricken interview te'o gave espn last fall. >> last thing she said to me was i love you. >> reporter: turns out the woman in the photo is the former high school classmate of the man implicated in the hoax. >> i'm not commented. so contact my legal attorneys. >> you got it. just tell me, are you doing okay, though? are you hanging in there? >> reporter: bennett smith says pete, who did a cover story on the heartbreak tail, may have made the biggest mistake when
11:08 pm
he contacted stanford last october, and administrators told him she did not attend the university. >> he couldn't confirm the details of the accident, so instead of pursuing that further, he pulled that information out of the story. >> reporter: and we're learning tonight that even after manti te'o told notre dame officials that the story was a hoax, he kept up the myth and at least two interviews after making that revolution. reporting live at stanford university, linda yee, cbs 5. also in the news tonight, the colorado theater where that gunman opened fire on moviegoers reopened this evening. there was a special event for survivors and the victims' families, followed by a screening of the latest hobbit film. 12 people were killed, dozens were wounded last july during a midnight showing of batman. and we learned a few hours ago at least four americans managed to escape from their al-
